Nuuk Hosts BlueRev Workshop on Enhancing the Use of Sidestreams

On 17 June, our partners from Food & Bio Cluster Denmark had the pleasure of hosting the BlueRev Demonstration Workshop in Nuuk, Greenland, in collaboration with local partner Nalik Ventures.

The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including private companies, government representatives, and NGOs, for a day of engaging discussions on sidestream valorisation, sustainable food production, and innovation in the blue bioeconomy. The workshop also contributed to the broader vision of implementing Greenland’s Self-Sufficiency Strategy 2025–2030.

The programme featured a rich line-up of speakers who addressed key themes aligned with BlueRev’s mission.

Kristian Ottesen from Royal Greenland opened the day with a presentation on how the company is creating value from by-products in the seafood sector. His talk focused on three specific sidestreams, cod frames, cod heads, and cod intestines, which would later serve as the foundation for a collaborative group activity.

Following this, Anni Simonsen presented highlights from Greenland’s Self-Sufficiency Strategy 2025–2030. Developed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Self-Sufficiency, Energy and Environment in cooperation with Rambøll Management Consulting and Pikiala, the strategy provided a shared framework for participants to reflect on and contribute to. Anni’s session launched an interactive workshop in which attendees, divided into two groups, brainstormed potential uses for the cod sidestreams. The results included creative suggestions for new products and reinterpretations of existing recipes, which were then shared and refined in a final plenary session.

Later in the day, APRE, represented by Alessia Careccia, introduced a new guideline designed to support SMEs in communicating their innovations within the bioeconomy sector. Nalik Ventures showcased their support for Greenlandic start-ups and SMEs, focusing on funding for both business and product development. Food & Bio Cluster Denmark also presented tools to support international matchmaking, sustainability assessment, and business development through the Enterprise Europe Network.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in lively and constructive dialogue with the speakers and one another, exchanging ideas and experiences on how to unlock the full potential of marine sidestreams. The event also offered excellent opportunities for networking and identifying future paths for collaboration.

We would like to warmly thank Nalik Ventures for their hospitality and partnership, and all participants for their valuable contributions, which made the workshop a successful and inspiring step forward for the BlueRev community.
